NHS and private blood pressure services

We offer pharmacy blood pressure checks and 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). The pharmacist will help you understand which service is appropriate and explain the results and next steps.

Who can use the free NHS service?

England · rules effective from 3 September 2026 · checked 10 October 2026

Routine NHS case-finding checks are generally for people who:

  • Are aged 40 or over.
  • Have not already been diagnosed with hypertension.
  • Have not had blood pressure measured by a healthcare professional in the last five years.

Some people under 40 with a family history or increased risk may qualify by exception. The pharmacist will assess this.

ABPM may be offered after a raised pharmacy reading or through an appropriate referral from your GP or another commissioned healthcare professional. Tell us if you have been referred so we can check the relevant pathway.

This NHS service looks for undiagnosed high blood pressure. If you already have hypertension or need ongoing monitoring, speak with your GP about your care plan. We can also discuss private ABPM where appropriate.

Our private ABPM service is available following a suitability check, including if you do not qualify for the NHS service. Contact us to arrange an appointment and confirm the monitoring and result-review arrangements.

What happens during a pharmacy check?

A cuff on your upper arm measures your blood pressure. The pharmacist explains the reading and whether monitoring or a referral is needed.

How does ABPM work?

A portable monitor connected to an arm cuff records readings at intervals over 24 hours, during the day and overnight. This gives a fuller picture of your blood pressure outside the pharmacy.

We explain how to wear the monitor, precautions to follow, when to return it and how your results and any GP follow-up will be arranged.
